Have you ever considered that staying in your job might actually be a mistake?

Last week, we started talking about the cost of having a job, and we’re going to continue that discussion today in the context of a story I heard a few years ago.

A woman left her job to have her child, and had stayed at home for about a year. At that point, she and her husband decided that they simply couldn’t afford for her to be a stay-at-home mom and really needed the extra income.

So she went back to work and hired someone to take care of her child.

After another year, she was involved in a TV program where they looked at the expenses her family incurred because of her job. At the end of the program, they told her how her job had impacted her family financially.

Going to work everyday had cost her $3,000 that year.

She had worked, sacrificed time with her family, and missed out on her child’s life and lost $3,000 extra dollars.

That was a real eye-opener for me.

Often times, when we’re in financially challenging situations, we opt for what we know. I remember my mother going through the exact same thing; getting part time jobs, dabbling in this and that, all kinds of things to make some extra money for the family.

It was hard for her though. She always questioned if what she was giving up was worth what she was getting.

The point of this is for you to take a look at your job and see if it’s really worth it. Often times the costs are intangible. Time away from your family, stress, and things that you can’t put a price on are what impact you the most in the end.

I want you to ask yourself, “Is staying in my job what I should be doing? And if I decide I shouldn’t stay there, what are the alternatives?”

That’s what we’ll be talking about in the upcoming weeks. I’ve been very grateful for some of those alternatives because they’ve allowed me the lifestyle and flexibility I really need.

I look forward to sharing them with you.

All the best,
Lorna Rasmussen
