Last week, we talked about career security and what that truly means.

It means that no matter what happens, no matter what comes your way, you know that you’ll be able to support yourself. You have the freedom to change your business as needed, so that you have the security to face the future.

At first, freedom and security probably seemed like polar opposites, but as you can see, they really go hand-in-hand.

So, what does “career freedom” mean?

I’m not just thinking of this based on the folks affected by the government shutdown, but about all> of the people who choose job security over career freedom. Not just the freedom to pursue what you want in life, or the freedom to spend time with your family, or freedom to do the things you love, but also the freedom to be better.

“Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.”Albert Camus

I have been in jobs where somebody told me what to do and exactly how to do it. Changing the system was not rewarded, and sometimes not even welcomed. It was a prison.

Career freedom is about pursuing who you are and what you’re capable of. It’s about really looking at yourself and deciding what’s important to you and what you want to be doing in your life.

A few weeks ago, I told you about the Free Wheel of Life Tool. You can look at your life to see where your strengths are and where you feel you’re lacking. I really hope that you’ve taken advantage of it.

Use it to see if you’re at a place where you feel like you’re really contributing, offering what you have to the world, and using your talents and abilities to the full extent. With freedom comes a lot of responsibility, and this tool gives you a map of your life now, to show you where you need to go.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to have somebody tell you what to do. Just like it’s easy to choose job security over freedom, it’s easy to have somebody else in control. To work at somebody else’s direction.

Choosing the path to both career security and freedom isn’t easy. It’s far harder than letting someone else lead you, but I promise you, it’s worth every extra step and every extra responsibility.

Next week, we’ll talk about the personal responsibility that comes when you choose both career security and freedom. (It’s one of my favorite topics.)

See you there!
