What’s something you’re afraid of?

I’m not talking about the kind of fear that makes you scared of snakes or spiders. I’m talking about the fear that holds you back from doing things you love, from being successful.

What’s keeping you from the life you dream of?

After I had been in sales for about a year, I was told that I’d be a lot more successful if I gave group presentations instead of one-on-one.

So I booked an appointment to talk with 12 people…

…and then the fear set in.

As I practiced the presentation, my fear grew stronger and stronger; so strong that I wondered how I could have an “accident” that would prevent me from doing the presentation.

I must’ve said something to my husband because he insisted on driving me there. When I got out of the car, my whole body was weighed down by fear. I walked in, made some small talk with people, and despite being scared, I did the presentation.

Yes, I made some sales, but that wasn’t the most important thing that happened; by taking action, after a few presentations, I overcame the crippling fear that almost stopped me from reaching my goal. Slowly I went from presenting for 12 people to enjoying getting up on a stage in front of 15 thousand.

I felt the fear and did it anyway. (That’s the title of a great book by Susan Jeffers.) This experience really taught me that we don’t overcome our fears by thinking our way through it.  We overcome our fears by facing them and doing things despite our fear.

Make a list of the things you’re afraid to do. Whether it’s something as simple as talking to strangers, or something as big as leaving your job, make a list of things that are holding you back because of your fear.

When you have your list, start doing them one after the others.

I hope that this helps you as much as it did me, and I hope you’ll overcome your fears and live a life you love.

Talk soon,
Lorna Rasmussen
