Have you ever been in a situation where you have 2 things that you’re passionate about, that you really want to do, but they conflict with each other?

What about a situation where you only have enough time or resources to choose one?

Now that you have a dream list and are thinking about what you want to accomplish in your life, you need to decide: where are you going to put your energy?

Achieving goals is no simple task; it takes a lot of time, energy and thought. So you want to pick the goals and dreams that are most important to you, most critical to you at this stage in your life.

But how do you decide what’s most important?

In order to decide what’s most important to you right now, you need to go through a process based on your values. Here’s an example:

I was a documentary filmmaker living in a small town in Pennsylvania. It was in the middle of nowhere, and there were very few opportunities for me to practice my profession I loved.

Amazingly, I got a job offer. It was with the University, making films for the local PBS station. I would get to travel all over Pennsylvania and it paid well. It was an incredible offer!

The only problem was I had a 3-year-old at home, and my husband traveled with his business. I looked at what was most important to me and realized it was my son, my family. So, I decided not to take the job. As much as I wanted it, as much as I tried to figure out how I could do it, I said no.

I knew what my values were, what was important to me, and while it meant that I had made a painful decision, I made a decision I could live with. I felt good about it because I chose what was most important using my value system.

Coming up with a value system can be a bit tricky. For so long in our lives, we’ve relied on our families, our churches, or other organizations to tell us what our values are. The problem is we all have individual values, and they’re based on our individual situations. Understanding that is critical for us to decide what’s most important in our lives, and therefore what goals and dreams we should be going after.

P.S. I have a new program that will be coming out soon. It’ll take you through the entire goal-setting process and value system! Keep an eye out for it. In the meantime, have a great time working on your goals and building a life you love.

Until next week,
