When I look back on my life and think about all the success I’ve had, I often wonder what factors played a role in that success.
I can tell you that it had nothing to do with luck, very little to do with skill, but it had a whole lot to do with mindset – how I thought about my situation, goals, and desired outcomes.
I want to talk today about why you should control your mindset, and how it can make you money.
Your mindset or attitude is simply a habit of thinking about things in a certain way. A lot of us are so ingrained in our habits that we don’t even recognize how we’re thinking. Because of that, every once in a while we have experiences that make us really think about our mindset and how it influences situations we’re in.
I want to tell you a story about how my mindset ended up getting me a sale…
At a chamber event one day, I met with a young man whom I’d been introduced to, who was selling something of interest to me. I decided to take a look at it and asked if, after his presentation, I could show him what I do. He said absolutely.
He went through his presentation, I decided his offer wasn’t right for me, and then I proceeded to go through my presentation. At the end, he bought what I was offering.
As I walked him out to his car after our encounter, he turned around and looked at me completely puzzled, and asked, “What happened in there? I came over to sell you something, you didn’t buy it, but I ended up buying yours. How did that happen?”
More than likely, he came over with the intent to make a presentation thinking, “I’ll make this presentation, and we’ll see what happens.”
I presented with the intent of making a sale. In my mind, if it was right for him, he would buy it.
Science tells us that what we’re expecting to happen influences the outcome. So whether you’re going out to make a sale, get a raise, or anything else, I hope that your mindset and expectations are positive, because the chances are much higher that you’ll get the outcome you’re looking for.
Changing my mindset has certainly changed my life, and I hope it changes yours.
